Established in 1964, the Food Stamp Program is a federal program that operates under the government of the city of Kingsport, Tenn. The program provides financial assistance services for low-income families to purchase food. It serves more than 385,000 families and distributes over $80 million in benefits. The Food Stamp Program is a part of the Tennessee Department of Human Services, which offers individual protection, child care, disability determination and rehabilitation services. The department also provides vocational training, technology application, educational and job placement services to individuals with visual and hearing impairments. In addition, it operates a rehabilitation center that offers support, counseling and transportation services to senior citizens.
