Founded in 1940, the Appalachian Electric Cooperative is a nonprofit, member-owned and operated rural electric cooperative. It provides a range of electrical service to customers in Tennessee. The cooperative maintains more than 40,000 members. It also buys electric power from the Tennessee Valley Authority, as well as employs over 80 people. The cooperative provides inspection, line relocation, tree trimming and outdoor lighting installation services. In addition, Appalachian Electric Cooperative conducts several educational programs for business groups, civic organizations, schools and community events. It organizes general presentations on a variety of topics, such as environmental health, weather safety, renewable energy sources, and electrical safety and conservation.
