About Miller Miller is located in east-central South Dakota midway between the state capital of Pierre and the city of Huron. Miller is the county seat of Hand County with a population of 1, 400. We have excellent access to transportation being located on the intersection of US Highway 14 SD State Highway 45 as well as being on the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad. Our modern airport has an asphalt runway that is 3, 600 feet long and features hangers, fueling facilities, and a pilot's lounge built in 2006. Hand County is composed of excellent farm land and rolling ranch land providing a balanced agricultural economy. Corn, wheat, and sunflowers are the main crops while cattle and hogs are the most prominent livestock. We have a vibrant downtown business district that serves our community and area. Miller's industrial sector is anchored by the headquarters of the Mid-Dakota Rural Water System and the main office for Clipper Windpower's Rolling Thunder project. Miller boasts a clinic and hospital, elementary through high schools, an assisted living center, nursing home, library, full city services such as 24 hour police protection, sewer, electric, and street departments. Emergency services include a 40 person volunteer fire department and an 18 person volunteer ambulance service. Recreational opportunities abound with some the finest pheasant and upland game hunting in the state. Lake Louise Recreational Area is only 14 miles northwest of Miller and provides bass and pan fish for the enthusiastic angler. Good fishing can also be experienced at Camp Dakota, Rose Hill and Jones Lake, all within Hand County. Miller is only 54 miles from Lake Sharpe and 78 miles from Lake Oahe on the Missouri River. Within the city limits, the city offers a swimming pool with water slide, tennis courts, basketball courts, two city parks, baseball and softball fields, and a free campground. The Miller Golf Course offers a picturesque and challenging nine hole course with water hazards in play on all nine holes.
