Neil McDevitt, MD, began his career as a general surgeon and chose to specialize in bariatric surgery because of the gratitude he received from his weight-loss patients. He was rewarded by the happiness he found sharing in his patients victories, and the potential he saw for improving the quality of their lives. He believes in treating people, not medical problems, and prides himself on being accessible to his patients. Before establishing his practice in Summerville, S.C., Dr. McDevitt served as Director of Bariatric Services for Beaufort Memorial Hospital. He is board-certified in general surgery and has performed weight-loss surgeries since 2004. He completed bariatric training at Emory University, and received certification from Allergan, the makers of the LAP-BAND gastric band. Dr. McDevitt performed his residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He received his undergraduate degree from Boston College, where he also received honors as Magna Cum Laude. Originally from a small town in New Jersey, he visited South Carolina's coast as he grew up and is glad that he and his wife now call the state home. He loves to fish, hunt, and kayak. He also joins "Team McDevitt" at occasional weekend road races and walks, but admits that he likes finishing a run more than starting one.
