The Medical University of South Carolina Department of Neurosurgery Services was founded in 2004 following the merger of the neurology, neurosurgery and physiology departments. The department specializes in the treatment of diseases and injuries affecting the nervous system. It is one of the largest neurosciences departments in the United States. The Medical University of South Carolina Department of Neurosurgery Services residency training program is approved by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education. The department s movement disorder program includes surgical therapies for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and various movement disorders, such as dystonia, spasticity, torticollis and hemifacial spasm. It specializes in kyphoplasty, which is a treatment for patients with painful traumatic and osteoportic compression fractures.
