Lander University is a four-year, liberal arts, state-supported university located in Greenwood, S.C. It was founded by the Methodist clergyman Samuel Lander in 1872 as Williamston Female College. The university offers bachelor s degrees in arts and science, and master of education degree. Its programs in business administration, nursing, teacher education, music, visual arts and theater are approved by the appropriate national accrediting agencies. The university has athletic teams for various sports, including basketball, soccer, tennis, baseball, golf, cross country, softball and volleyball. It also offers club sports that include equestrian, ultimate disc and rugby. Lander University is approved by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is a member of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference. The university s official mascot is the Bearcat.
