HistoryThe Chamber's first meeting was held with 13 members present at what was then called Swallow's Tavern (or City Tavern) located at 46 Broad Street. It was incorporated in 1784 as the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. Founder and first president Alexander Gillon, a merchant and seaman, presided for two years.SpecialtiesEstablished in 1773, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce is distinguished as the first municipal Chamber of Commerce in the United States and the longest continually operating business membership association. The Chamber has a 243+ year legacy of protecting and strengthening the Charleston Region's business community, helping businesses grow and thrive.
