Barrington's Senior Center is one of about 15 accredited sites in Rhode Island. Director Louise House came to the position in 2010 after a long career with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Membership is free, as are most programs. Among the services offered to residents 55 and older are social and recreational activities such as scrabble, bridge, bingo, seminars, day trips, a weekday lunch, parties, and overnight excursions. Personal enrichment activities include painting, chorus, computer and safe driver classes. Wellness activities include exercise, tai chi, yoga, line dancing, chair massage, blood pressure checks, a flu clinic, and glaucoma screening. Seniors can get help with health insurance, prescription plans, and emergency dialer system installations. A seven-member Senior Center Advisory Board oversees operations. Friends of the Barrington Senior Center raises funds through a yearly campaign. A computer lab, the senior van and the fitness room are among their gifts. The Senior Center is located on the south side of the library and community center building.
