The Rhode Island State Police, founded in 1925, is a statewide, full-service law enforcement agency with jurisdiction in more than 35 cities and towns in Rhode Island. It employs a staff of over 210 full- and part-time sworn and nonsworn officers and nearly 50 civilians and community volunteers. The police agency supports AMBER Alert, which is an emergency alert system that helps recover abducted children. The Rhode Island State Police operates a police museum that features a collection of artifacts, photographs, and videotaped and historical items related to the police department. It maintains charitable gaming, commercial enforcement and technical service units, as well as a detective bureau.
