Established in 1991, the Rhode Island Workers Compensation Court is responsible for the jurisdiction over various disputes related to workers compensation benefits between employers and employees. It maintains an appellate division that reviews the record of proceedings, as well as evaluates legal and factual issues presented to the trial judge. The Rhode Island Workers Compensation Court also hears claims that involve disputes that arise from employers policies of workers compensation insurance. In addition, it operates a medical advisory board that establishes protocols and standards of treatment for work-related injuries. The Rhode Island Workers Compensation Court deals with more than 8,000 petitions every year. It is a part of the Rhode Island Unified Court System, which includes family, district, supreme and superior courts.
