The East Smithfield Water District, located on Waterman Avenue in Smithfield, was created to distribute water services on a retail basis to residential, commercial and industrial consumers within a specific service area. Included in this area are the Georgiaville and Esmond sections of Smithfield and the Greystone section of North Providence. Water service is provided to over 7,500 people through 33 miles of water main. The district board, governed by seven members, appoints the district treasurer and the district moderator, while the other five members are elected for a three-year term by the ratepayers of the district. The chairperson is elected by a majority vote of the members. The East Smithfield Water District retains four full-time employees and one part time employee.
