About North Smithfield School District The North Smithfield School Department is a public school district that serves the Town of North Smithfield, located about 15 miles from Providence in northwestern Rhode Island, bordering Massachusetts. North Smithfield is located in the northwest portion of the original territory of Smithfield. The town was incorporated in March 1871, and was at first named Slater. Sixteen days later its original name was changed to North Smithfield. North Smithfield was rural-agrarian in its beginnings. The town has assumed a suburban character but has not lost its early charm, which is so characteristic of North Smithfield The School Department is a community of approximately 1, 900 students, 235 faculty members, 87 staff, and 12 administrators, including the Superintendent of Schools. The School Department is overseen by North Smithfield School Committee, five representative individuals elected on a rotating basis every four years by the citizens of the town.
