Gladstone Street Elementary School opened its doors in 1953. It is located in a neighborhood that was once home to many mill and factory workers, including those who worked at the former Narragansett Brewery.
One of the older schools in the district, Gladstone Street Elementary School is also one of the largest with a sizable auditorium and gymnasium. It once featured an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool, but it was closed years ago.
After being designated "in need of improvement" and "making insufficient progress" by the Board of Regents in 2005, the school has made steady progress in improving student achievement. In 2008, it was classified as a Regents' Commended School.
