HistoryOriginally founded by Alfred I. DuPont, the Tankopanikum Orchestra is the DSO's earliest ancestor. After this organization was disbanded, two prominent businessmen, Major Kellogg Kennon Venable (K.K.V.) Casey and Cyrus Peter Miller (C.P.M.) Rumford, formed the Wilmington Orchestra in 1906. Later, the Wilmington Symphony club was established in 1912, conducted by Harry Stausebach. In 1929, the name was changed to the Wilmington Symphony Club, and by 1940, the sixty-member ensemble grew to 90. Mr Stausebach's successor was Van Lier Lanning. The Wilmington Symphony club was renamed The Delaware Symphony Orchestra in 1971. In 1979, Stephen Gunzenhauser became the music director, a position he held until the election of David Amado, the current music director. The DSO performs a wide range of repertoire, bringing live symphonic music to Delawareans and those in surrounding areas.SpecialtiesAs the state's only professional orchestra, the DSO brings symphonic music to thousands of Delawareans through its Classical and Chamber concert series, special concerts, and education and community engagement programs.
