Established in 1836, the School District of Lancaster is the second oldest district in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It serves approximately 11,000 students and governs thirteen elementary schools, four middle schools, one high school and two alternative schools. The district operates through curriculum, health services, special needs services, athletics and transportation departments. Its schools curricula include language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, business education, foreign languages, and health and physical education. Its schools offer a variety of sports activities, such as basketball, volleyball, football, cross country, cheerleading, and track and field.
