Founded in 1968, the Port Authority Police Department is responsible for the security and protection of customers, employees and facilities of the Port Authority of Allegheny County, Pa. It provides a range of law enforcement services and operates over a 730-square mile area. The department has more than 35 police officers and over 15 security guards and a fleet of marked and unmarked police vehicles. It has a traffic investigation unit to respond to major accidents involving the port authority. The department s detective unit is responsible for receiving and following up on complaints by bus operators and patrons that require plainclothes officers. In addition, it has two canine units that are trained in the detection of explosives and work alongside veteran port authority police officers. The Port Authority Police Department is located in Pittsburgh.
