Based in Philadelphia, Monell Chemical Senses Center is a nonprofit independent multidisciplinary scientific research institute offering interdisciplinary basic research on the senses of taste, smell and chemosensory irritation. The center was established in1968 and receives guidance and financial support from the Ambrose Monell Foundation and from federal and state agencies. The facility occupies a 60,000-square-foot building with specialized laboratories, library, conference rooms, animal care facilities and an aquatic facility for fresh and saltwater species. It also works on various public health and life issues, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, pediatric health, occupational safety, environmental pollution and homeland security. Its multidisciplinary basic research explores all aspects of the chemical senses through laboratory research and clinical studies. Monell Chemical Senses Center s trainees include high school students in internship programs, doctorate recipients, senior scientists from academia and industry seeking new skills and specialized trainings.
