Founded in 1953, Lancaster Public Library provides direct service s to more than 480,000 residents of its community. It also serves as a district center that provides interlibrary loan and reference service s to more than 15 independent libraries statewide. The library is the central facility for the library system that serves throughout Lancaster in Pennsylvania. Lancaster Public Library has a collection of more than 760,000 volumes. The library uses the Unicorn library automation system. In addition, Lancaster Public Library participates in a shared automation system that is provided by the Traverse des Sioux Library System consortium.
