HistoryThe Jazz Workshop, Inc. began in 1973. Harold Young, Sr. founded this organization based on need. There had been two musicians' unions, the local 471 (Black Musicians' Union) and local 60, the (White Musicians' Union). Due to a forced merger, because of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the unions became one organization. However, this diminished the focused mentoring that African Americans had been receiving. Mr. Young saw the need and 'stepped up to the plate' by initiating the JWI.
