History
Maia opened her first store in 2006, as a place where clients and students could find quality herbs and extracts. The first shop, called The Apothecary Garden, was only 7 feet wide by 14 feet long--and that included a bathroom! Needless to say, we quickly found ourselves in need of more space. In 2007 we moved Herbiary to its current Chestnut Hill location on Germantown Avenue. We've grown quite a bit since then, opening our second store at The Reading Terminal Market in 2010. There is a bit of magic in reintroducing traditional medicines to this hundred-year-old market. Andrew is particularly fond of learning the Market's history and can regale you with stories of its checkered past. While Andrew focuses on running the business, Maia has found her niche teaching classes and meeting with clients. Both of us feel incredibly lucky to do the work we love and to share the bounty of the natural world with all of you.
Specialties
Herbiary sells medicinal herbs, teas, extracts, essential oils, books, natural supplements, homeopathics, flower essences, and body care products. Our items are either organic, wild crafted, or cultivated without chemicals. When possible, we try to source our products locally and are trying to find local farmers to produce the herbs we sell in the shop. We also make a strong effort to use green practices in our business. While we encourage people to bring their own bags, we also will only use paper bags. If we have an option, we will always choose less packaging or packaging in glass instead of plastic. We use recycled paper for the receipts (if you need one) and make efforts to re-use both boxes and packaging materials for our shipments. In addition to our retail stores in Reading Terminal Market and Chestnut Hill, we also offer classes and consultations for those seeking to learn more or get additional help with their health concerns.
