Tova du Plessis, former pastry chef of The Rittenhouse Hotel, opened this small bakery in South Philly in April 2016.

We specialize in Jewish style breads and pastries. We are well known for our babkas (chocolate halva or cinnamon hazelnut) and our challah bread.

I love the black & white cookie here as well as cinnamon rugelach! Babka is Essen's signature but that's because you never had its rugelach! Trust me, try it and you won't go back to babka again....
