Standing literally in the shadow of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, this all-volunteer fire company serves the eastern side of Upper Milford Township. It responds to about 165 fire calls a year, including emergencies on a 15-mile stretch of the turnpike. The company also is known as Vera Cruz Fire Company, named for the village in which it is based. It has 25 volunteer firefighters and always is looking for new recruits. Its social quarters are in the original firehouse building, directly across Main Road from the fire station. The fire chief is Jerry Schantz, who rides a fire engine-red Harley.
