The Allegheny County Police Department, established in 1932, is a full-service law enforcement agency that prevents crime, protects residents lives and their property, suppresses criminal activity and apprehends law offenders. It employs a staff of more than 240 officers and over 50 civilians and community volunteers. The Allegheny County Police Department has a records division that manages and processes department reports, requests, firearm permits, registrations and documents. The police department maintains a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team that specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations. It also has audio and video forensic, narcotic detection, K-9, mounted patrol and airport drug interdiction units.
