Located in the southwest of Portland, just a few miles from neighboring Lake Oswego, Tryon Creek State Natural Area is an urban oasis. Spread throughout 670 acres of lush, wooded forest are eight miles of well-maintained hiking trails (including trails for the youngest of hikers), a three-mile paved bicycle trail and even miles of horse trails. Thanks to the healthy creek that gives the park its name, it is also home to abundant wildlife, including deer, foxes, rabbits, snakes and fish. You can learn all about the animals and plants that make their homes at Tryon Creek in its well-appointed Nature Center.
Parking and public transportation at Tryon Creek
Tryon Creek has a large parking area outside the Nature Center. Parking is free. You can get to within about 1/4 mile of the Nature Center at Tryon Creek by taking the 39 bus to SW Palatine Hill and Lewis & Clark.
Best and worst time to go to Tryon Creek
Tryon Creek is filled with towering, moss-covered evergreens, so no matter when you go you will see plenty of green. When it rains, the paths can get quite slippery - particularly when going over the bridges. Given the amount of shade provided by the lush overhang, even hot, sunny days are relatively mild once on the trails. If you go on a weekend - particularly after 10 a.m., and particularly on a sunny day - be prepared to share the trails (and to circle around a few times for parking).
Admission to Tryon Creek
Admission to Tryon Creek is free. There is a small gift shop located in the Nature Center.
Must see/do at Tryon Creek
Definitely make a stop at the Nature Center before heading out on your hiking or biking adventure. They have a number of exhibits about the history of Tryon Creek as well as hands-on activities for the kids. Of course, the real draw is the trails, and the folks at the Nature Center can help orient you and figure out the best trails for your needs.
