Tarr has built its business on the basis of three product groups, chemicals, fuels, and oils and lubricants. It was founded in Portland, Ore., by Art and Mae Priestley to market mineral spirits to the dry cleaning trade, its main supplier being Royal Dutch Shell PLC. The company expanded its line to include all dry cleaning supplies and other solvents and lubricants produced by Shell and Chevron Corporation. Tarr distributes solvent and chemical products in the Northwestern United States and is progressing in the Southwest. Its acquisitions have included two Portland, Ore., oil jobbers, Rinchem Company of Phoenix and the establishment of a warehouse/office facility in Seattle. Tarr is in Portland.
