International Paper is committed to fiber recovery, recycling and recycled materials. Recycling not only diverts a valuable resource from landfill disposal, it also reduces the environmental footprint of paper and packaging products. The combination of wood fiber from well-managed forests and high product recovery rates make paper and paper products some of the most sustainable products in the marketplace. In fact, the fiber in most of the products we manufacture can be recovered and used to make new paper, container board, coated paperboard or corrugated boxes. With a recent acquisition of additional recycling facilities, our system now recovers, processes and will manage over 8 million tons of fiber in 2008. International Paper encourages customers to work with us to improve product recovery in order to reduce paper disposal in land fills, help keep prices for recovered fiber affordable and promote the wise use of paper and packaging products. With 19 recycling facilities across the United States, fifteen International Paper container board mills, and a significant national brokerage system, the company collects, consumes, and markets more than eight million tons of recovered paper annually. We collect and process this recovered paper at our own plants as well as buy paper from outside sources. The recovered paper is then used by our mills to create new paper products or is sold to other manufacturers worldwide.
