The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, established December 1914, is a full-service law enforcement agency that employs a staff of more than 35 full-time sworn officers, civilians and community volunteers. It supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the usage of illegal drugs, gang activities and violent behavior. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office maintains a communication center that responds to emergency and nonemergency calls for police, fire and emergency medical assistance. The office also operates a 160-bed adult correctional facility that provides detention facility to convicted criminals and pretrial detainees. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is located in Madras, Ore.
