Northeastern State University, founded in 1851 under the name Cherokee National Female Seminary, is one of the largest universities in Oklahoma. The university offers more than 65 undergraduate degrees, over 15 graduate degrees and various preprofessional programs in five colleges. It has a student-to-faculty ratio of 26 to 1. The university also provides a distance learning program, where students who cannot attend classes due to work or family obligations can complete courses through the Internet or videoconferencing. It has athletic teams for various sports, including basketball, football, softball, baseball, soccer, golf and tennis. The university also has two student jazz ensembles. Northeastern State University is located in Tahlequah with branches in Broken Arrow and Muskogee, Okla.
