The Absentee Shawnee Tribe is a public agency provides a selection of services and programs to its tribal members and the larger American Indian community. It maintains a cultural preservation department that preserves, maintains and protects traditions, cultures and languages. The department organizes a variety of activities, such as demonstration classes, language programs, exhibitions, archives and cemetery preservation projects, as well as operates a gift shop, museum, resource center and the Tribal Historic Preservation Office. The Absentee Shawnee Tribe offers a variety of family services, including assessments, case management, counseling, and alcohol and drug prevention, as well as after-school tutoring, cultural enhancement and social activities. Located in Shawnee, Okla., it also provides several health, educational, clothing, burial assistance and social services, as well as maintains a child development center.
