Founded in 1935, the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, also known as UAW, is one of the leading unions in North America. The union caters to the needs of multinational corporations, small manufacturers, state and local governments, colleges, universities, hospitals and private, nonprofit organizations. It has more than 500,000 active members and features over 3,000 contracts with various employers in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. UAW is comprised of nearly 800 local unions and handles grievances related to health and safety problems. The union also has auto contracts with Chrysler and Ford, as well as administers a community action program. It operates the UAW-Ford National Programs Center and an agricultural implement department.
