Dement Cemetery, also known as Columbia Street Cemetery, is Springfield's oldest cemetery, established in 1804. It is the final resting place for several Revolutionary War soldiers, early pioneers, and notable individuals such as James Kelly, grandfather of industrialist O.S. Kelly. Although the cemetery has suffered neglect over the years, there are plans for renovation by the Springfield Preservation Alliance.
In the 1850s, due to the growing population and the need for more burial plots, the city council established a larger cemetery known as Woodshade Cemetery, which was later relocated to the current site of Wittenberg University. Dement Cemetery, located on Columbia Street, is a historic landmark that reflects the early settlement and development of Springfield, Ohio.
