Holy Spirit Parish, founded in 1965, was named in honor of the patron of the Second Vatican Council, and helps serve a good portion of Catholic worshippers in Avon Lake and surrounding communities, including western Cuyahoga. The church originally celebrated Liturgies at Learwood Middle School until the original building was completed in 1967. The church, one of only a few round Catholic churches, sits on 9.6 acres on the corner of Walker and Lear roads and maintains a large parking lot. Unique to the church is the "Holy Spirit window" above the altar. According to the church's website, the seven red rays featured represent the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Counsel, Understanding, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord fused into souls at Baptism and strengthened through the sacrament of Confirmation. The church rectory was completed in 1973. Holy Spirit's Fr. Mosovsky Hall is often the site of social and community gatherings. In 2002, a new parish center was completed, including the Chapel of the Holy Family. Fr. Mosovsky Hall was also renovated at this time. The church maintains a broad spectrum of ministries including caring ministries, bereavement, celebrating, evangelizing, music, teaching and participating ministries. Fr. James H. Beatty has been serving as pastor since 1994.
