The Allen Correctional Institution, founded in 1987, offers a range of inmate programs. The institute has a reading room that includes a variety of books and art and craft supplies for children. It provides vocational training in power equipment technology, turf management, and electrical, carpentry and masonry repair skills. The Allen Correctional Institution employs a staff of more than 350 people. The institute offers repair services for chairs and tables for local churches and schools. It constructs and refinishes picnic tables, as well as handles maintenance projects for the Lima City Parks and Recreation Department. The institute offers the Bonds Beyond Bars, which is a program designed for girls to spend time with their fathers who are incarcerated. The Allen Correctional Institution is a part of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
