The Ohio Association of Public School Employees/AFSCME Local 4 is one of the largest unions that represents the employees of public schools, libraries, Head Start facilities, and boards of mental retardation and developmental disabilities in Ohio. It has more than 37,000 members in over 480 local areas. The association handles issues related to legislation, education, organization, privatization, retirement and health care, paraprofessionals, coalitions and strikes. Established in 1934, the Ohio Association of Public School Employees/AFSCME Local 4 offers a variety of benefits to members, including scholarships and opportunities to participate in family fun days. It operates several regional offices. In conjunction with its sister affiliate, Ohio Council 8, the association represents more than 90,000 members. It is a member of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).
