Founded in 1968, the Western Piedmont Council of Governments is a regional planning organization that provides project administration and technical assistance solutions to its member governments. It serves more than 20 municipalities and over 25 local governments throughout Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties in western North Carolina. The organization maintains administration, community development, finance, public services, and environmental and transportation planning divisions. It operates the Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is responsible for providing transportation planning process in the Hickory Urban Area. The organization additionally coordinates the Family Caregiver Support Program, which offers funds to support senior citizens. It also provides housing, watershed protection, work fore development and land use planning programs. The Western Piedmont Council of Governments is governed by a policy board that consists of elected officials and nearly 50 staff members.
