The SALT Block is a must-see destination in the Hickory, N.C., Metro thanks to the broad variety of cultural attractions it offers. Parking and public transportation at the SALT Block
The Hickory Metro's Greenway Public Transportation bus system stops outside the SALT Block, but the landmark is best accessible by car, bicycle or foot. There is ample parking, including handicapped access, and the block is connected to Hickory's sidewalk system.

The public space on the SALT Block is open year-round, and Catawba Science Center, Hickory Museum of Art, Patrick Beaver Memorial Library maintain regular business hours. When planning a visit, consider current exhibits and special events at these amenities, especially at Catawba Science Center and Hickory Museum of Art. Mid-week school field trips create crowds that you might want to avoid, and while weekends are busy, they may offer the best time for a visit, especially during frequent special events.
Admission to SALT Block
There is no fee to enjoy public park spaces scattered around the SALT Block, and there's no admission charge to enjoy Hickory Museum of Art and Patrick Beaver Memorial Library. There is an admission for Catawba Science Center ($6-$8), but children under age 3 get in free, and all science center admissions include a ticket to public shows in the digital planetarium.
Must see/do at the SALT Block
Tour the grounds and search out the variety of outdoor sculptures scattered throughout the site, including wind-driven whirly-gigs, and creatively painted park benches that celebrate Hickory's vibrant arts and culture scene. If there's room in the budget, a ticket to Catawba Science Center grants access to the aquarium, science museum, digital planetarium shows and rotating special exhibits.
Other places to visit near SALT Block
The SALT Block is an easy walk, ride or drive north to Maple Grove; northeast to McComb Park and Beaver Memorial Garden; or southwest to the Ivey Arboretum at Sally M. Fox Park. The SALT Block is also convenient to the downtown Hickory business district, which includes dining and retail shops.
Insider tip for visitors to SALT Block
Visit the SALT Block on the third Friday of the month – "free Friday" - when admission is free at all Catawba Science Center's exhibits, except the digital planetarium shows.
