Asheville Fire and Rescue Department protects lives, property and environment of the residents of Asheville, N.C., through fire education programs. The department offers various fire prevention programs, and helps in minimizing adverse effects of fires, accidents and other emergencies. The department runs a special operations division that is responsible for the department's communication equipment, including radios, telephones and computers. The division maintains and updates computer-aided dispatch systems, and is responsible for the department's specialized teams, such as water and high-angle rescue teams. The teams handle a wide range of rescue operations, including confined space, trench, extrication and building collapse operations. Asheville Fire and Rescue Department also operates regional response teams to protect citizens, and establishes methods for responding to hazardous materials emergencies. The agency also has a task force for carrying out fire investigations.
