The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is a division of the Department of Justice with statewide jurisdiction. It is responsible for assisting local law enforcement agencies with criminal investigations and the apprehension of criminals. The bureau works closely with local police and sheriffs, other state investigative agencies and federal authorities. With an office in Greenville, N.C., the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation investigates, analyzes, identifies and apprehends criminals. It undertakes a variety of investigations, including homicide, missing person cases, robbery and property crime. In addition, the bureau performs duties related to drug and arson investigations, election laws, child sexual abuse in day care centers, and theft and misuse of state property.
