The Metropolitan Sewage District is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The district was established in 1962 by the North Carolina State Stream Sanitation Committee. Its purpose is to construct and operate facilities for the treatment and disposal of the sewage generated by the political subdivisions in the district. The MSD is a public body and corporation of the state of North Carolina. It exercises public and essential governmental functions and is organized under the provisions of the North Carolina Metropolitan Sewerage Districts Act, Article 5, Chapter 162A of the General Statutes of North Carolina. The district is comprised of several political subdivisions located within Buncombe County. Asheville, N.C., is the main political entity.
