History
In 1942, the Laurinburg-Maxton Army Air Base was created in Maxton, North Carolina. During World War II, the Air Base was the largest glider training facility in the nation until its closure in 1945. At the end of the war, the Department of Defense gave the abandoned Air Base and the surrounding 4,500 acres to the City of Laurinburg and the Town of Maxton. The two municipalities formed a Commission to govern the facilities and the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport was officially established in 1945.
