Kolcraft Enterprises started in Chicago in 1946 when Leo Koltun made playpen pads out of cotton batting and oilcloth covers for post-World War II babies. In 1949, he found himself with surplus padding and invented the all-around crib and Playard bumper pad. A period of rapid growth followed as the company expanded into manufacturing other types of pads, including crib mattresses in 1951. In 1979, it began making plastic products with the introduction of the Carri-Cradle, the first combination plastic infant carrier and rocker with a carrying handle. The company continued its expansion into the manufacture and distribution of other products, including Playards, high chairs, walkers, strollers, bassinets, bouncers, swings and juvenile furniture. By 1994, Kolcraft became one of the nation's leading suppliers of strollers.
