The North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, established in 1972, is dedicated to fairly and effectively addressing Indian affairs by utilizing local, state, and federal resources to provide aid and protection for State-recognized Indian tribes. The Commission promotes social and economic development within Indian communities, holds land in trust for the benefit of tribes, and supports the pursuit of cultural and religious traditions considered sacred by Native Americans.
Under the leadership of Chairman Rev. Ricky Burnett, appointed by Governor Roy Cooper in 2019, the Commission consists of 28 members representing various American Indian communities in North Carolina. Through programs and initiatives, the Commission works to uphold the rights of Indians, foster recognition of their cultural heritage, and facilitate collaboration between tribal groups and government entities.
