The Columbus County Health Department works to prevent disease, promote health and protect the environment for the citizens and assesses and responds to the health needs of the community. It provides screening physicians and supports the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP), which is offered to women between the ages of 50 and 64, who are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare. The program provides early screening and follow-up for breast and cervical cancer survivors. Located in Whiteville, N.C., the Columbus County Health Department also organizes the wisewoman program that teaches and promotes various aspects of a healthy lifestyle. The health department operates several Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that enforces influenza and flu vaccine manufacturers to produce and distribute more than 100 million doses of influenza vaccines in the United States in flu seasons.
