The museum saves and shares the Charlotte region’s history, connecting it to today. Our exhibits explore important civic themes and how their meaning has evolved over time, including ideals of liberty, freedom, equity, justice, democracy, and citizenship. The museum sits on an eight-acre wooded campus in East Charlotte and is the site of the oldest surviving home in Mecklenburg County, the 1774 Alexander Rock House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is Charlotte’s only remaining structure from the American Revolutionary period. Also on the historic homesite are a relocated barn dating to the era, a reproduction log kitchen, a reconstructed two-story springhouse, and the newly restored Rosenwald-Style Siloam School. Museum programs and tours highlight how people lived during the Revolutionary Period and tell of the many cultures that came together to build Charlotte.
