History
The YWCA of the Tonawandas began its service to the Western New York community with an Open House at its present site, 49 Tremont St. in North Tonawanda, on September 11, 1913 to which all women and girls were invited. Since that historic day, the YWCA has lived the world YWCA and national YWCAs' mission to empower women by providing opportunities for growth and leadership always striving toward a common vision of peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
Specialties
The YWCA Tonawandas is recognized by the community for its excellence by providing quality services around domestic violence and youth development, as a voice for women, as an advocate for the elimination of racism and other forms of discrimination, as a builder of family and community, while forever focused on the YWCA regional, national, and global missions. The YWCA primarily serves women and children who are victims of domestic violence and abuse through free individual counseling, court advocacy, referrals to local resources, psycho-educational support groups, food pantry and clothing closet, and job searches. The YWCA Tonawandas operates a before and after-school program at Hamilton Elementary and Edison Elementary in the Ken-Ton School District, as well as a summer camp.
