History
United Ways were formed in the 1800s as a way to raise funds for non-profits that did not have the manpower to raise funds themselves. Since then, United Ways have grown and evolved, working with other community agencies to tackle community issues.
Specialties
United Way of the Southern Tier is the largest non-government funder of health and human services in Chemung and Steuben counties. In 2012-13, we are funding nearly 100 programs offered through 50 community partners. In addition to funding, United Way also collaborates with other providers in the community on initiatives that promote economic self-sufficiency and access to services: the CA$H free income tax assistance program, Community Care Centers, 211 Helpline and 211 Give Help.
