Founded in 2002, Putting Green Company of Long Island grew out of a passion for practicing golf in a serene home setting. For years, co-founder Jim Graham, would hit approach shots back and forth on his two acre property in Oyster Bay Cove, NY. While attending the US Open at Bethpage Black in June, 2002, Jim met a PGA representative who expounded on the virtues of a new generation of synthetic turf that looked realistic and played like bent grass. As though a light bulb flashed, Jim realized that an opportunity was born to design and install backyard short game facilities that would compare in popularity to a pool or tennis court. Having an entrepreneural spirit coupled with a passion for golf, Jim relied on his venture capital experience to analyze the backyard putting green business. Although the industry appeared to be growing, Jim knew that acceptance of the product on Long Island's North Shore and in the Hamptons would be assured only if the synthetic turf was of the highest quality, the workmanship was exact, and the design element distinguished the final product from others in the market place. The result of this research, which included weeks of driving throughout the Northeast to see finished projects of his potential competitors, has been narrowed down to the following mission statement ; Install short game golf systems that play like bent grass, look like golf greens at one's country club with bunkers, contours and undulations, compliment the homeowners existing landscaping, and strive to exceed the clients expectations whether the project is big or small. This remains the mission today. In the fall of 2008 The Putting Green Company of Long Island entered into an agreement to be purchased by Business Partners Richard Donno, Scott Kata Frank Abate. Richard and Scott, both avid golfers, were looking for avenues to expand their current business. This was a perfect opportunity for them to expand into an area they love. Frank Abate has been project manager since the companies inception. Frank has a remarkable ability to translate the designs and plans of Richard and Scott, bringing them to reality. The partners have an incredibly strong background in landscape design and construction. This allows them to combine their over 90 years of site design experience with their knowledge of the intricacies of golf. The result of this synthesis of design, love of the game and superior product, is the ability to create a green complex that excels in both playability and aesthetics.
