South Salem Elementary School is located at the southern end of the Port Washington peninsula. The school offers children in grades K-5 stimulating and rigorous learning opportunities in a safe, nurturing and supportive environment. The school's goal is to provide an instructional program that fosters the intellectual, emotional, social and physical development of each child. By providing teaching that informs, inspires and challenges, the school's staff hopes to instill a love of learning that continues throughout each child's life.
The Port Washington curriculum is aligned with the New York State standards in English/Language Arts, Writing, Math, Social Studies and Science. Students also receive special area instruction in art, vocal and instrumental music, physical education, and library. In addition to a fully equipped technology lab, every classroom has a networked bank of three computers. The South Salem staff also includes a school nurse, psychologist, guidance counselor, speech pathologists, reading and math specialists, an enrichment teacher, TESL teacher and a special education teacher.
The mission at South Salem Elementary School is to educate all students by building self-confidence in a safe, enthusiastic and respectful environment. Students, staff and parents work together with Principal Christopher Shields to celebrate each child's uniqueness and love of learning.
