Smithtown Animal Shelter cares for lost, stray and surrendered animals in Smithtown. Supervisor George Beatty jokes about the shelter's appropriate location amongst the town's car dealerships: "The car dealerships sell used cars, we sell used pets." There is one major difference: "The cars only come with a 5- year warranty, our pets with a lifetime warranty of unconditional love." Beatty's staff seeks to reunite lost animals with their original owners and to find new homes for unclaimed pets. The shelter features a dog walking path out back and a unique cat lounge. The animal control laws of the township and of the New York State Department of Agriculture are accurately enforced. Additionally, the shelter dispatches officers to respond to residents' complaints regarding stray, vicious, injured, barking or loose dogs as well as other domestic or wild animals. Volunteers are welcome, and residents interested in adopting from the shelter can meet available pets online at the following website: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NY53.html.
