The Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton is the home of the sovereign Shinnecock Nation, federally recognized since Oct. 1, 2010. It includes public businesses along Montauk Highway, but the rest of the reservation is residential and private. Only Shinnecocks and invited guests may drive into the reservation. However, every year during Labor Day weekend, the tribe holds a pow wow open to the public, with an admission fee. The pow wow includes native dance competitions and vendors selling traditional Native American food, art, clothing and crafts.
The tribe is governed by an elected council of three trustees.
